Abortions increase
by 12.1 percent in
Genesee County

A total of 1,520 abortions were reported in Genesee County in 2009, an increase of 12.1 percent over the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Statewide in Michigan, the totals dropped by 13.9 percent to 22,357, the report said.
The majority of  Michigan residents receiving abortions, about 52 percent, were under 25 years of age, while 18.8 percent were under 20 years old.
About 89 percent of women receiving abortions were unmarried. And 48.5 percent of women had one or more previous abortions.
White women accounted for 50.7 percent of all abortions; black women for 42.5 percent.
Most abortions involved pregnancies of 12 weeks or less (88.3 percent) and the most frequent method used (82.8 percent) is known as suction curettage, in which a vacuum tube sucks the baby from the womb whole or in pieces.

Knights deliver ultrasound
to Flint pregnancy center

A brand new ultrasound machine is at work saving lives at Flint Crisis Pregnancy Services. The machine was delivered free of charge by the 14 Knights of Columbus councils in Genesee County.
A second machine will be delivered to the Answer Center for Women in Flint within the next several weeks.
The Knights, with help from Catholic parishes in the county, will have raised $25,000 for the machines, with that figure being matched by their national council to make the purchases.
“What a tremendous blessing,” said Clara Clark, executive director of Flint Crisis Pregnancy Services. She said the machines are known to be more than 90 percent effective in persuading pregnant women to carry their children to full term.

 Everyone loves a parade

A supportive crowd waved and clapped at the passing of the Right to Life banner at Linden’s Summer Happening parade. The banner was carried by the Genesee County Affiliate of Right to Life of Michigan.
Genesee Affiliate members also walked in the Fenton July 4th holiday parade a week later, joining up with North Oakland County Right to Life.
